Dr Irene's TidBits - Diabetes

Soluble fiber and diabetes
Question

Johanna from Pennsylvania asks:I know oatmeal also lowers blood sugar. What other foods lowers blood sugar?

Answer

I need to immediately clarify that those individuals with diabetes should not eat oatmeal to lower their blood sugar. Using foods high in soluble fibers will not lower blood sugar because they are also sources of carbohydrate. It is true that soluble fibers may help lesson the impact of food carbohydrates on blood sugar. Your blood sugar will still rise if you have diabetes and eat more carbohydrate than your body can tolerate at one time. There is not enough soluble fiber to reduce the absorption of all the carbohydrates. If someone ate soluble fibers with very few calories, like a sugar-free fiber supplement, then their blood sugar may slightly decrease.
