Dr Irene's TidBits - Food Facts

Antioxidants in foods
Question

Luis from Peru asks:Which of these products have more antioxidants: green tea, concord grapes or blackberries?

Answer

Antioxidants are just not one substance and foods contain many different antioxidants. This makes it makes it difficult to provide a concrete number. For example, berries contain several antioxidants from vitamin C to the lesser known phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonoids. Each probably has their own benefits. Rather than worry about which food has the most, I would include a variety of foods known to contain anti-oxidants and then you are sure to receive a reasonable amount of total anti-oxidant in your diet.
