Dr Irene's TidBits - Minerals

A banana a day
Question

Question: Lucille from N.M. asks: My husband wants to eat bananas a lot on his cereal everyday. Is this wise? He's in his 70's and a little overweight. Isn't that too much potassium?? You could say he loves bananas!!

Answer

A normal healthy person excretes any extra potassium in his diet, so eating bananas every day is not too much potassium. A banana is very nutritious and only between 100-150 calories, depending on size. I do not think it should be removed just because of weight concerns. I much prefer an individual reduces foods low in nutrient density, like most desserts, if they want to reduce their weight.
