Exercise and weight
Question

Florence from Maryland asks:
I joined the gym about 4-6 weeks ago. I have been using the treadmill, lifting low weight with lots of repetitions, and I am currently following weight watchers for my diet. I feel like I am at a weight plateau but that it should not be since my exercise time is substantially increased even though I am eating similar amounts of food. I know I can be gaining muscle which would counteract---but how long before you see the fat start to go?

Answer

It is not unusual to reach a weight plateau when trying to lose weight with both diet and exercise. Muscle weighs more than fat so if your weight is staying the same and your are increasing your exercise, you are actually losing fat. Do not use the scale as your only indicator of success. In fact, I don’t like using the scale at all. I prefer using how clothes feel and if you are feeling healthy and good about yourself. From what you are describing, you have every reason to feel great about your efforts. Keep up the good work!
