Dr Irene's TidBits - Weight Control

Potassium content of foods
Question

Annie from New York asks: What are the best foods to replace potassium if one is on a weight loss diet and can't eat all the calories in bananas and potatoes. I am on hydrochlorothiazide for blood pressure and weight watchers. Sometimes my potassium gets low

Answer

Many foods are high in potassium and low in calories, including most vegetables. Vegetables that are particularly high in potassium include fresh tomatoes, broccoli, and spinach. Skim milk is also high in potassium. All of these foods are also encouraged in the DASH diet to lower blood pressure. (see first 4 chapters of Dr. Irene’s Nutrition Tidbits, see URL1 below. There is also a chart of the potassium content of specific foods on page 258.)
